The Egg Theory was created by writer Andy Weir as a way to explain the meaning of life. It suggests that every person who has ever lived is, actually the same soul, just being reborn into different bodies over time. So in this view, your soul has been every person throughout history. You are living all human lives, one after another. The theory says the whole purpose of the world is for this one soul (you) to gain experience and learn lessons through each lifetime it lives. So that even though you don't remember past lives, part of your soul contains all the memories and experiences from being everyone previously. The idea is that you, as this eternal soul, are going through each human life to expand as a consciousness. It offers an escape from the concept of LONELINESS that plagues the human condition and serves our FEAR OF DEATH and our DREAMS OF IMMORTALITY
Do I agree with this theory of life, no I do not. It’s just a theory after all. And to me, it’s a mix of different ideas that are not mixing well. Some of these ideas are merely poetic but the egg theory tries to make them literal. For instance, in this mix, there is the poetic idea that only you are real, it’s your show and all others are simply actors in your dream. The problem I have with the egg theory even though it throws in the idea of oneness (I am you and you are me), is that it betrays what the concept of Oneness seeks to evoke. The purpose of the idea of Oneness or the consciousness of it, is that it seeks to destroy or break the illusion of SEPARATION. The illusion of separation is the source of the ego. In other words, the ego only exists because of the illusion of separation. The egg theory pampers the ego rather than encouraging you to transcend it. It pampers a certain subtle self-absorption. You become preoccupied with making your present self-awareness the god of the human story. And that’s where it fails because then what if everyone believes the egg theory? Who is the god then and who are the actors? You’re living in your mind and you forget others are also capable of living in their minds, and that is how the ego continues to play with us.
If a theory doesn’t make you see your view of yourself, as being separate from others, also as an illusion just like everybody else, the ego is comfortably ruling your thoughts. What makes this hard is that we must feel important otherwise our lives feel meaningless. And that’s the trick of the ego. We dread the thought of irrelevance or feeling irrelevant. But it shouldn’t be so. There is no higher sense of purpose, meaning, and relevance than truly identifying with all things. Your separate self is but one window through which the One perceives itself. Such a window is a unique expression or manifestation of the One. Thus since you are a window, you are also the One. Your mum is also a window, thus your mum is but another unique expression of The One. In other words, your mum is just a unique expression of you, but hold on don’t stop there, YOU TOO ARE A UNIQUE EXPRESSION OF YOUR MUM (this is the part the ego hides so it can control us). You too are a unique expression of the bolt driver or the delivery guy. In the same way, they are unique expressions of you. Everyone is God, yet no one is God.
Grasping this is one thing, but walking in it consciously is a daily work till the unique expression of THE ONE that you are, completes the chapter that you are and proceeds to the next. No one is relevant, only The One is, and yet each one is relevant as though only they exist. Our seemingly separate selves are merely chapters of one story or verses of one song. Howbeit, chapters and verses, harmoniously flow into each other, none of them making sense if they stand isolated from the rest. It’s a Uni-Verse after all(uni, meaning one, verse meaning song)
